Durable AASHTO M249 Reflective Thermoplastic Paint for Adhesion and Skid Resistance on Road Surfaces
Product Description
AASHTO M249 thermoplastic paint is a reflectorized thermoplastic material specified by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) under the M249 standard for use in pavement markings. It’s a solid compound composed of synthetic resins, plasticizers, pigments, fillers (such as calcium carbonate), and glass beads, which is heated to a molten state (typically 180°C–220°C) and applied to road surfaces like asphalt or concrete. Once cooled, it hardens into a durable, weather-resistant, and retroreflective stripe, ideal for high-visibility road markings such as lane lines, crosswalks, and symbols.
Key Properties:
-
Composition: Contains at least 18% binder (resin), 30–40% glass beads for reflectivity, and, for white markings, a minimum of 10% titanium dioxide for brightness.
-
Colors: Available in white and yellow, meeting specific reflectance standards.
-
Performance: Designed for adhesion, skid resistance, and durability under heavy traffic and harsh weather, with tests for bond strength, cracking resistance, and softening point.
-
Application: Applied hot using equipment like extruders or sprayers, often at a thickness of 30–125 mils (0.76–3.18 mm).

Steps to Use Thermoplastic Paint:
-
Surface Preparation:
-
Clean the surface thoroughly to remove dirt, dust, oil, or loose debris. Use a broom, wire brush, or pressure washer as needed.
-
Ensure the surface is dry, as moisture can prevent proper adhesion.
-
For porous surfaces like concrete, you may need to apply a primer to enhance bonding. Check the manufacturer’s instructions.
-
Heat the Thermoplastic:
-
Load the thermoplastic material into a preheater or melting kettle.
-
Heat it to the recommended temperature, typically between 180°C and 220°C (356°F to 428°F), depending on the specific product. Stir occasionally to ensure even melting and to avoid scorching.
-
Monitor the temperature carefully—overheating can degrade the material.
-
Test the Consistency:
-
The molten thermoplastic should have a smooth, liquid consistency, free of lumps. If it’s too thick, it won’t apply evenly; if too thin, it may not set properly.
-
Apply the Paint:
-
For Road Markings: Use a striping machine or screed box to pour the molten thermoplastic onto the surface in the desired pattern. Work quickly, as it begins to cool and harden once applied.
-
For Smaller Areas: Use a hand-held applicator or trowel to spread the material evenly.
-
Maintain a consistent thickness (usually 1.5–3 mm, depending on the project requirements).
-
Add Glass Beads (Optional):
-
For reflective markings (e.g., road lines), sprinkle glass beads over the wet thermoplastic immediately after application. The beads will embed as it cools, improving visibility.
-
Cooling and Setting:
